“I’m excited to be a part of this Nail The Mix event where I get to pull the curtain on and share such an epic song with Karnivool’s “Deadman”. This band, album and song, pushed me to evolve my production and mixing skills beyond where I thought possible. It will be an honour to present some of those insights and discuss the details of mixing the album opus and all the challenges it presented.” – Forrester Savell
Things To Know
This was one of the two songs on the album that were recorded “live”, with the bass and drums in the same big room @ Kingdom Studios in Perth, Western Australia, which happened to be an old Masonic lodge. The band had been playing this song live for some time, so we all felt that it would be worth attempting to capture a live vibe. It was the first time I had openly embraced recording a loud cab in the same room as drums.
The song took me just over 3 days to mix on an SSL console. Later, on the last day of album mixing I recalled it and remixed it in about 6 hours because I felt the first version (that the band had signed off on) was too thin sounding. Luckily it worked and it is the version that made it on the album.
